About the Program

Tani Cantil-Sakauye is the 28th Chief Justice of California, the first Asian-Filipina American and the second woman to serve as Chief Justice. Sworn in on January 3, 2011, Cantil-Sakauye chairs the Judicial Council of California, the administrative policymaking body of state courts, and the Commission on Judicial Appointments. She received her J.D. from the University of California, Davis, and has served for more than 20 years on California appellate and trial courts.

In 1990, Governor George Deukmejian appointed Cantil-Sakauye to the Sacramento Municipal Court and in 1997, Governor Pete Wilson elevated her to the Superior Court of Sacramento County. On the Superior Court, she presided over both criminal and civil assignments. In 1997, she established and presided over the first court in Sacramento dedicated solely to domestic violence issues. In 2005, Governor Schwarzenegger nominated her to the Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District.

Lindsey Kozberg (moderator) is vice president for external affairs at the RAND Corporation, overseeing fundraising, media relations, government and community relations, RAND's online presence, editorial and creative support for RAND Publications, and the RAND brand. Trained as an attorney, Kozberg practiced law for several years with Latham & Watkins in their Los Angeles-based land use and government affairs group. She has also worked in the public sector at the federal and state levels, most recently as director of public affairs for the U.S. Department of Education and as a special assistant to the president at the White House. She received her J.D. from Stanford University.
