RAND terrorism expert Brian Michael Jenkins will lead this exclusive Hill discussion on current events in the Middle East and North Africa. Jenkins will share a firsthand account of what he learned from key leaders during his recent trip to the region.

He will discuss how changes in Egypt and Syria are reverberating within the region, and beyond, via terrorist networks including al Qaeda.

Among the issues he will address:

  • How is al Qaeda taking advantage of unrest to gain footholds in Egypt, Syria, and Iran?
  • Is the terrorist organization looking to expand into Europe? How might it succeed?
  • What influence does al Qaeda have on Hezbollah in Lebanon?

Brian Michael Jenkins is a senior adviser to the RAND president with expertise in terrorist groups, particularly al Qaeda. He recently returned from an extended trip in the Middle East. He is the author of "Al Qaeda in Its Third Decade: Irreversible Decline or Imminent Victory?" and "Will Terrorists Go Nuclear?"
