RAND Provides Forum for Defense Economics at WEAI Conference

RAND researchers organized and participated in a series of defense economics sessions at the 76th Annual Conference of the Western Economic Association International (WEAI) on July 4-8 in San Francisco. This year's program featured noted economists Milton Friedman, Dan McFadden, and Joseph Stiglitz.

RAND has created and nurtured a forum within WEAI's infrastructure that has become the primary venue for researchers across the country to meet to discuss defense economics issues. This year, RAND analysts Laura Baldwin, Ed Keating, Ellen Pint, Susan Gates and Chris Fair presented their work in the areas of recruiting and retaining military personnel; the DoD planning and budgeting process; costs and effectiveness of military benefits; acquisition policy and the defense industrial base; and earnings, promotions, and spousal satisfaction.

Approximately 60 researchers and policy makers from RAND, other federally funded research development centers and research institutes, the service academies, academia, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the U.K. Ministry of Defence, industry, and the Congressional Budget Office participated in the event.
