RAND Expert to Testify on Role of Strategic National Stockpile and COVID-19
Daniel M. Gerstein, senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation and former undersecretary (acting) and deputy undersecretary in the Science and Technology Directorate of the Department of Homeland Security, will testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee on “The Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) and COVID-19.”
Gerstein will discuss:
- the challenges presented to the stockpile by the expansion of its original mission from bioterror to preparedness and response for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats, pandemic influenza and natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes
- the role of the stockpile in pandemics, concentrating on the part that federal, state, local, tribal and territorial governments play in responding to pandemics and how the stockpile supports their efforts
- recommendations for rethinking national stockpiling capabilities for future biological events including pandemics.
