The codebooks in this volume describe the contents of data files from the Health Insurance Experiment (HIE), a large social experiment conducted by The RAND Corporation from 1974 to 1982 under a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The codebooks document each variable in the health maintenance organization claims line-item files, which contain health service usage data concerning HIE participants enrolled in an experimental group and a control group at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, a large prepaid health service in Seattle, Washington. This primary-variable information has been categorized into eleven files according to the type of health service rendered.
