This Note provides definitions for the codes used in the claims line-item files and aggregated claims files, collectively known as the "claims files" of the Health Insurance Experiment (HIE). The HIE was a large social experiment conducted by the RAND Corporation from 1974 to 1982 under a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Note lists codes taken from sources cited in each of its sections. It includes only the codes used by the HIE. Some supplementary codes were added to existing codes under the direction of a RAND HIE physician to describe conditions or services not reflected by the existing codes. A few codes were created by the HIE, and are indicated in the appropriate sections.
