This Note describes the contents of two data files from the Health Insurance Experiment (HIE), a major social experiment conducted by The RAND Corporation from 1974 to 1982 under a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Note details most of the measures used by the HIE to determine how different levels of insurance affect state of health and satisfaction with health care. The measures are grouped in two "health status and attitude" data files — one on adults, the other on children. Background information is provided on the two files, including the sample of participants for whom data were recorded and how the data were compiled.
