Some Examples of Propulsion Applications Using Antimatter

Bruno Augenstein

ResearchPublished 1985

Reasonable macro applications of antimatter and annihilation energies are possible if basic production and storage problems are solved. This paper, prepared for a recent antimatter propulsion workshop, discusses some propulsion applications in three major classes: those giving specific impulses of about 1000; those giving specific impulses in the 2000 to 20,000 range; and those giving very high specific impulses. The author concludes that schemes for using antimatter for propulsion are conceptually available.

This publication is part of the RAND paper series. The paper series was a product of RAND from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
