Describes a methodology for choosing the nodes for an energy demand signed digraph using the subjective judgments of groups of experts. The method is illustrated using energy use in the transportation sector, in particular in the intraregional commuter transportation sector, as an example. Round one of the procedure involves gathering a large list of relevant variables through a free response questionnaire circulated among experts. The variables are then classified and organized, and the second round attempts to limit their number by having the experts rate overall and relative importance. Median overall importance and geometric mean relative importance ratings, calculated from the experts' responses, are presented and various procedures for choosing variables given such data are discussed. 93 pp. Ref.
