RAND Europe is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members to its Council of Advisors, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn and Florian Freiherr von Heintze. The Council of Advisors supports RAND Europe's mission to help improve policy and decision making through research and analysis, and is chaired by Michael Rich, President and CEO of the RAND Corporation.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn was EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science (2010-2014). Prior to that post she was a Member of the European Court of Auditors (2000-2010) and an elected member of the Irish Parliament for 22 years. She served in several ministerial roles of State for a range of areas, including commerce, education, European affairs, justice and transport.

On retirement from politics in 1997, Geoghegan-Quinn pursued positions in the academic and private sectors. She holds honorary doctorates in Science and in Law and has received several prestigious awards, including the Légion d’Honneur presented by then French President Hollande in 2014.

Florian von Heintze has over 30 years of media experience. Since 2004 he has been Deputy Editor-in-Chief of BILD, Europe’s best-selling newspaper. He has held leading positions at various German-based newspapers and magazines throughout his career. He was a foreign correspondent in New York and Washington and a political correspondent in the former German capital Bonn, as well as in East Berlin during the reunification of Germany.

In addition to managing and editing, von Heintze initiated various campaigns at BILD on a range of important social topics, including climate change and the 2015 European refugee crisis. He is a Visiting Fellow at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership and Policy.
