The Forces in Mind Trust commissioned RAND Europe to conduct a systematic review of literature on UK Service leaver families' into civilian life. The study examined the evidence base across four thematic areas: engagement with families, family breakdown, family housing and spousal employment. The review identifies areas where evidence is lacking and presents a series of recommendations for future research.
Bolsa Familia (BF) is a conditional cash transfer programme in Brazil. This report aims to understand the principal agent problem in BF. Our findings suggest that implementation agencies must have a clear incentive in the programme either through the provision of support to them in the programme or through being held to account. We show that more integration between BF and supporting services is associated with better implementation.
This brief examines maternity and parental leave provision across European countries and its potential impact on the breastfeeding of very young babies (up to 6-months). We also consider economic factors of potential extension of maternity leave provision to 6 months, such as costs to businesses, effects on the female labour market attachment, and wider consequences (benefits and costs) for individuals, families, employers and the wider society.
Despite the positive effect of paternity- and parental leave uptake by fathers on a number of economic, social and demographic outcomes, the current uptake of leave by fathers across Europe is low. In this brief we provide a synthesized overview of paternity leave policies and policies which encourage sharing parental leave between new parents as currently implemented in Europe, and discuss policy levers for increasing uptake of lave by fathers.
