Abstract

Graphics are a good means for exploring and presenting data and for evaluating models. Statistical models are valuable for testing ideas and for estimating relationships between variables. The two complementary approaches need to be integrated more strongly, especially in the analysis of large data sets. The issues will be illustrated using interactive software from the Augsburg group and a large sociological data set discussed in the book "Bowling Alone" by Robert Putnam.
