Basic Needs and Mental Health Support for College Students

Many individuals who pursue postsecondary education or training face financial challenges. Low-income students and older students balancing work and family are especially likely to experience food and housing insecurity. College students are also increasingly affected by depression and anxiety.

States and postsecondary education and training institutions across the U.S. are exploring ways to to provide students with basic needs and mental health support so they can complete their education, access more job opportunities, and improve their economic and mental well-being. To support this effort, RAND researchers examined promising approaches to meeting college students’ basic needs and mental health needs, and offered practical guidance for college leaders and staff working to better support students.
