Bill Zito

Bill Zito is the associate director and head of AI Policy for the RAND Center on AI, Security, and Technology (RAND CAST) at. RAND. 

Prior to joining RAND, Zito was a software engineer at Aurora Innovation, where he developed AI evaluations and machine learning infrastructure for autonomous vehicles. He then helped build out engineering and operations teams as the organization grew from 30 to 300.

After that, Zito started and helped lead two AI nonprofits, Redwood Research and Constellation Institute, publishing on AI evaluations and controlling AI systems.

Zito has experience building teams and organizations of 30 to 300 across RAND, the private sector, and the nonprofit sector. In particular, he specializes in focusing research centers on the right priorities and rapidly scaling teams while maintaining research quality. He’s fundraised over $100M across the teams and organizations he’s helped run.
