Discusses measuring the benefit and value of services for persons with eye disease. It concludes that the benefit of the service to the patient should be assessed in terms of quality of life. Physicians should determine what is important to the patient by asking what effect visual problems (as well as other diseases) will have on him or her. The patient's degree of functioning is as (or more) important as traditional clinical measures. The effect of visual problems on general health status should also be assessed.
