Kelly Piazza is a political scientist at RAND. She is also a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University and a Council on Foreign Relations Term Member. Methodologically, she is a mixed-methods researcher with varying levels of experience in literature reviews, surveys, focus groups, interviews, workshop development and execution, causal inference techniques, regression analyses, data visualization, and wargaming. Substantively, she is interested in a wide range of topics, including strategic competition, security cooperation, military personnel and health, foreign policy, space policy, the Global South (with an emphasis on Latin America), counterterrorism, human security, economic development, and Women, Peace, and Security. She has published on these topics in various RAND reports and in academic journals, including Armed Forces & Society, World Development, and Latin American Research Review, and has presented at prestigious foreign policy events, including the Aspen Security Forum, D.C. Edition, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Before joining RAND, Piazza served as both an associate and an assistant professor at the United States Air Force Academy and as a visiting assistant professor at Wesleyan University. She received her B.A. from Lafayette College and her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
