Colin Pilbeam

Research Leader (Education, Employment and Skills)

Colin Pilbeam is a research leader in the Education, Employment and Skills team at RAND Europe.

His areas of research interest focus on safety in organizations, including safety leadership, safety culture and learning from incidents. In particular, he is interested in the interaction between contextual conditions in organizations and the effectiveness of adopted safety interventions, with some of his more recent projects investigating the processes of effective translation of safety interventions between organizational settings, notably in maritime search and rescue with the International Maritime Rescue Federation

Formerly Professor of Organizational Safety at Cranfield University, he is an accomplished research leader with considerable experience in directing research projects across a range of scales from single investigator projects to collaborative international programmes involving teams of multi-disciplinary scientists. Funding for this work has come from UK Government Departments, UK Charities (including Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, Lloyds Register Foundation and the Royal Academy of Engineering) and industry. 

Pilbeam received his Ph.D. from the University of Reading and his D.B.A from the University of Bath.
