Digital Engineering in Action

RAND’s National Security Research Division is hosting a 2-day tabletop exercise (TTX) to explore how digital engineering (DE) works across a defense acquisition lifecycle. The overarching goal of the TTX is to advance adoption of DE as a transformative approach to defense acquisition, ensuring that programs are better positioned to deliver capability on time, within budget, and with reduced risk to support the American warfighter.

We Need Your Expertise

Please join us on Monday, June 15 and Tuesday, June 16 in our D.C. office for a Digital Engineering TTX that will work through a fictional Middle Tier of Acquisition (MTA) Rapid Prototyping program and the real-world challenges it will likely face—e.g., multiple vendors, data rights issues, hardware/software transitions, funding pressures, integration headaches.

The TTX will provide a structured environment in which to explore the integration of digital engineering across functional domains and lifecycle phases, with the overarching goal of speeding capability to the warfighter. Key questions include: What does each functional role need to do to implement digital engineering? When should these efforts begin? What digital engineering artifacts need to be handed off to the next lifecycle phase?

Your Role in the TTX

We are looking for practitioners from every functional area—program management, engineering, contracts, business financial management, testing and evaluation, cost estimating, risk management, sustainment, and industry. Your professional judgment and candor are what will make this exercise work.

As a representative of your particular functional area, you’ll

• make decisions about which DE methods and tools to implement—and when
• navigate tradeoffs between cost, schedule, performance, and risk
• test assumptions as the program evolves through development, testing, and transition
• identify what works, what breaks, and what's missing from current DE guidance.
