Cambridge, UK, 04 August 2008 – RAND Europe today announced that Philippa Foster Back OBE has joined its Board of Trustees.
"I am delighted to be able to contribute to an organisation whose work benefits the public interest in such important areas," Foster Back said. "I'm looking forward to participating in the intellectual engagement of the type of policy research and analysis that RAND is known to produce."
Jonathan Grant, president of RAND Europe and a trustee, said he was "very excited" to welcome her to the board. "Philippa's experience and expertise will make an invaluable contribution to the success of RAND Europe," he said. "We are greatly looking forward to working with her."
Foster Back, who has more than 30 years of business experience, has been director of the Institute of Business Ethics since 2001. In connection with her work there, she served on the Woolf Committee during 2007-08 looking at ethical business practices in BAE Systems. In addition, she serves on the advisory board of the Centre for Corporate Reputation at the Saïd Business School at Oxford University, and is a visiting fellow of the university.
In 2007 she was appointed to the board of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, now a Foundation Trust, where she chairs the audit committee. She is also chairman of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.
In 2006 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for services to the Ministry of Defence, where she was formerly on the Defence Management Board and chair of the Defence Audit Committee from 2002-2007.
The appointment of Foster Back comes just five months after RAND Europe welcomed to the Board of Trustees three new members: former MP, The Right Honourable Michael Portillo; former chief executive of the NHS and Permanent Secretary of the Department of Health, Lord Crisp; and Frank Kelly, Master of Christ's College, University of Cambridge, and the Professor of the Mathematics of Systems.
Other trustees of RAND Europe include Philip Lader, former U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James's, chairman of The WPP Group and a RAND Corporation trustee; Sir John Boyd, former diplomat and Master of Churchill College, University of Cambridge; Sir Professor Lawrence Freedman, vice-principal (research), King's College London; and James A. Thomson, president and CEO of the RAND Corporation.
