Contrasts the original promises of managed care for dental providers and patients with the present realities of managed care in dentistry. The authors suggest that three issues need to be addressed: financial equity for the patient and the provider; the quality of the care provided under capitated systems; and the need for regulation. Managed care plans in dentistry should achieve a balance between providing quality dental services at a price employers will pay and rewarding dentists for their professional ability.
