Review of Child Survival in Developing Countries: Can Demographic and Health Surveys Help to Understand the Determinants? By J. Ties Boerma (Amsterdam: Royal Tropical Institute, 1996). This book represents the author's doctoral dissertation and resulted in six articles in refereed journals, one book chapter, and an important methodological report. The reviewer points out that this volume pulls together an important stream of substantive and methodological research related to one of the most visible efforts in international demographic research. It also provides a strong foundation from which to assess one of the major innovations in the DHS programme, which was to expand information collected on child health.
