Introduction to a supplement to the journal issue that focuses on findings from the Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatment (SUPPORT) and its companion stuffy, the Hospitalized Elderly Longitudinal Project (HELP). The authors provide a summary of the history and accomplishments of this study and an overview of the articles in this supplement.
