Kansallinen teknologian ennakointitoiminta on osa laajaa kenttää, joka koostuu teknologian ennakoinnista, ennustamisesta ja arvioinnista. Ennakointi on ensisijaisesti kansallisen innovaatiopolitiikan kehittämisen väline. Ennakoinnilla pyritään nostamaan esiin teknologia-alueita, joihin maiden tulisi nyt ja tulevaisuudessa kiinnittää huomiota. Niillä yritetään myös tunnistaa tulevaisuuden yhteiskunnallisia haasteita ja miettiä teknologian tarjoamia ratkaisuja. Useimmissa Euroopan maissa on viime vuosina toteutettu laajoja kansallisia teknologian ennakointihankkeita ja ennakointi on saanut viime vuosina huomiota myös Suomessa.
