An Evaluation of Published Measures of Diabetes Self-Care Variables
ResearchPublished 1979
A review of the literature to discover how well important diabetes self-care variables can be measured. Attempts were made to locate information about measurement quality and then to estimate measurement bias and measurement error variance. No information relevant to measurement in diabetic populations was found. For broader populations, 24-hr. patient recall of diet information appeared minimally biased but subject to large measurement error variance. Self-reports of pill-taking compliance contained severe response biases; patient reports of physician visits appeared unbiased but may contain moderate to large amounts of error variance. Research in developing new measures for diabetic patients was recommended. (Appendix B to R-2480.)
