As part of the Housing Assistance Supply Experiment (HASE), the final (wave 4) survey of neighborhoods was conducted in St. Joseph County, Indiana (Site II of the experiment), from January 1978 through October 1979. The survey had two parts--neighborhood facts compiled from local sources (NLS) and observation of street segments (NSOB). Each had its own instrument and produced a separate data file. This codebook documents the survey variables and a set of analytic variables derived from them. For each variable, the codebook reproduces the exact text from the survey instrument or describes how the variable was derived; specifies all permissible responses; and provides a tabulation of the responses recorded in the final master files of survey records: 86 for the NLS and 12,933 for the NSOB.
