As part of the Housing Assistance Supply Experiment (HASE), the first (baseline) survey of neighborhoods was conducted in St. Joseph County, Indiana (Site II of the experiment), from August 1974 through December 1975. The survey had two parts--neighborhood facts compiled from local sources (NLS) and observation of street segments (NSOB). Each had its own instrument and produced a separate data file. This codebook describes a set of variables derived from the original survey variables. For each derived variable, the codebook details the construction, specifies all permissible responses, and provides a tabulation of the responses recorded in the final master files of survey records, 86 for the NLS and 12,152 for the NSOB.
