1979 DOD Survey of Personnel Entering Military Service

Wave 2 User’s Manual and Codebook

Zahava D. Doering, David W. Grissmer, Jane S. Morse

ResearchPublished 1980

Describes the 1979 survey administered to enlistees at all 67 Armed Forces Entrance and Examination Stations (AFEES) immediately after enlistees were sworn in. The survey was one of several interrelated collection efforts of the Rand-DOD Survey Group, a component of the Rand Manpower, Mobilization, and Readiness Program. The first four sections of the Note describe the rationale of the survey, sample and administrative procedures, and data-processing procedures, especially those with analytic implications. Preliminary information about response rates is also included. The codebook sections reproduce each question in the two questionnaires used in the fall 1979 survey, together with every permissible response category. Variable-specific explanatory notes also appear. The files for this survey contain a total of 15,573 records, 7830 for Form 3 and 7743 for Form 4.
