Linking U.S. Oil and Gas Reserve Estimates

The purpose of this Note is to provide an informed, plausible series of proved reserves and annual reserve changes by type for crude oil and natural gas (dry) that links these two different series of reserve estimates over the late 1970s. It describes the basic differences between the two published series of reserve estimates, explores the possible reasons for differences between the two series, and describes the approach used in linking them. It then presents the published and linked estimates of crude oil and natural gas reserves, reserve changes by type, and production for the individual states and statistical subdivisions for which those data have been published. Finally, it provides aggregate estimates of crude oil and natural gas reserves for the United States summed from the disaggregated linked estimates.
