This codebook describes the contents of a data file from the Health Insurance Experiment (HIE), a large social experiment conducted by The RAND Corporation from 1974 to 1982 under a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The codebook provides demographic data for the entire participant sample of 26,148 people — all enrollees and anyone ever considered for enrollment in the HIE. The full sample demographic file consists of variables derived from administrative data maintained at RAND to keep track of participants over the course of the experiment. For each variable in the file, this codebook lists the data sources, defines all response codes, and tabulates the response frequencies.
This publication is part of the RAND note series. The note was a product of RAND from 1979 to 1993 that reported miscellaneous outputs of sponsored research for general distribution.
