A proof that the functional-equation technique of dynamic programming may be used to treat a class of problems which arises in constructing multicomponent devices. An attempt is made to determine the types of components and the quantities to be used in constructing the most reliable device possible subject to given cost and weight constraints. A numerical example is given.
