A proof that the functional equation technique of dynamic programming can be used advantageously in analyzing weighted pulse-code modulation (WPCM) communication systems. WPCM differs from normal PCM in that the amplitude of the transmitted pulses representing the binary digits in a pulse-code group is made to depend on the size of the group and on the power of two represented by the individual pulses.

This report is part of the RAND paper series.
