A proof that wave propagation in inhomogeneous media may be studied through the use of invariance principles similar to those used in radiative transfer and neutron transport theory. A wave- localization principle is proved. The analytical techniques derived furnish a new approach to some significant problems in mathematical physics, while the physical concepts provide new insight into the analytic structure of the solutions of the one-dimensional wave equation.
