The application of dynamic-programming techniques to the optimization of control systems. The concepts of the state of a controlled element and the transition matrix are used to describe the behavior of the controlled element. The paper discusses various types of performance indexes or error criteria used to measure controlled element performance. The examples given involve the optimization of a simple linear sampled data servo system and an application to a controlled element, the behavior of which is described by the Van der Pol equation.
