Length of the Laminar Hypersonic Wake during the Ballistic Re-entry of a Blunt Object.

P. S. Lykoudis

Expert InsightsPublished 1963

An analysis of the length of the wake of an object that does not move in a medium of constant mass density. Although the deceleration that the body will suffer does not influence its fluid mechanical aspects, the wake will develop temporally at each fixed altitude as if it had moved past that point with a constant velocity equal to the one it had when passing through that point. A steady-state solution is developed; results are obtained in a closed form without the need for numerical integrations.

This publication is part of the RAND paper series. The paper series was a product of RAND from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
