A discussion of an electrical propulsion system in such major space efforts as the manned Mars expedition, lunar transport, and deep space probe missions. The study concludes that the very high specific impulses of the electrical propulsion system might make possible substantially lower vehicle masses in initial earth orbit and lower trip costs for many space missions than would nuclear or chemical rockets. The paper also gives the limitations of the electrical system and suggests possible directions for future development. 57 pp. Bibliog.
