An analysis of conveyor systems

Expert InsightsPublished 1964

An application of multichannel queueing theory to the analysis of conveyor systems with an ordered entry of items. The analysis assumes (1) that an item will seek serevice as the conveyor passes the service channels, and (2) that all channels are equally capable of processing items. Both mathematical simulation analyses are presented. The major conclusions are that many parameters considered do not have a significant effect on the steady-state probabilistic performance of the conveyor system and also that a constant arrival rate will improve overall system performance.

This publication is part of the RAND paper series. The paper series was a product of RAND from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
