A consideration of properties of nuclear explosions which influence predictions and scalings for fireball phenomena, notably fireball sizes, temperatures, densities, and, ultimately, thermal radiation output. The paper focuses on the initial features of fireball formation, for which it examines the scaling with both yield and altitude of burst.
