An analysis of Project Futuribles, an international venture which operates on the premise that the future is not a given unknown but one of many possible futures. Futuribles has gathered expert speculation as to possible future developments in various areas, which are presented in 83 published essays. The author maintains that, while there cannot be a science of the future, there are rigorous ways of thinking about it. The paper describes methods and some of the complexities involved.

This report is part of the RAND Corporation paper series. The paper was a product of the RAND Corporation from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
