Technical writers; educated or trained?

Expert InsightsPublished 1965

A discussion of the influence of computers on the future of editors and technical writers. The paper describes two possible innovations: (1) a typewriter-like console giving the editor access to computer services of storage and printout; (2) a "tablet" on which to make changes, using a stylus, in a text moving on a screen. These innovations, while they may change certain habits, do not change the responsibilities of the editor or his position in the communication process; they will simply make his work more exacting. He will continue to need an education in basic communication disciplines, and should have sensitivity to words, awareness of mathematics, and experience in a science. 8 pp.

This publication is part of the RAND paper series. The paper series was a product of RAND from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
