Improving the Equalization of an Arbitrary Envelope Delay.

In answer to the problem of achieving the precise envelope delay equalization required by the stringent tolerances imposed on modern high-speed communication channels, this paper presents a readily programmed algorithm for obtaining optimum (in a least-squares sense), realizable, rational function network approximants for an arbitrary envelope delay, given an adequate first approximation to the prescribed delay characteristic. The sense in which the resultant solution is optimum and the requisite closeness of the initial approximant are quantified. (See also P-3663.) 26 pp. Ref.
