Input-Output Relations for Axo-Somatic Activation in a Neuron Model.

Experimental findings have suggested that axodendritic activation is the primary source of nonlinear integration among input pulses, while axosomatic activation mediates a relatively inflexible driving action on the cell. A theoretical basis for this distinction was previously examined and a model was presented to account for the nonlinear properties of axodendritic activation. The present study addresses the properties of axosomatic activation with a digital computer simulation of the elicitation of spikes by postsynaptic potentials. Input-output relations for regular and irregular temporal patterns of excitatory activation, and for combined excitatory and inhibitory activation, are presented.
