An historical survey of U.S. involvement in Vietnam and an examination of U.S. policy alternatives in the context of the traditional American ideal of freedom. The United States has the alternatives of (1) withdrawal, (2) continuing a war of attrition, (3) negotiation, and (4) an integrated military-political-economic strategy scheduled to achieve significant results within a specified time. American traditions and present commitments require meeting Communism's threat in Vietnam in terms of the fourth alternative.
