An examination of some of the physical and analytical aspects of envelope delay inherent in data channels, a primary source of system degradation and signal impairment that has impeded signaling rates. The distortion accompanying a nonuniform envelope delay transmission characteristic can (1) limit the imagery acutance of graphical displays; (2) lead to read-write errors during data storage and retrieval in tape systems; and (3) cause misinterpretations of digital baseband signals by generating intersymbol dependencies. Various combinations of signal waveforms and system delay distortion are explored that are encountered in practical situations. A set of generally accepted goals for constructing delay equalization algorithms is presented. 26 pp. Ref.
