A Process Function for Rail Linehaul Operations.

The development of a linehaul process function that relates the ton-miles per hour produced by a cargo vehicle, transporting commodities from origin to destination, to a host of variables. The output of the linehaul process function reflects the quantity of cargo carried, the distance it is carried, and the speed of the vehicle. Trip time, route characteristics, and equipment used are also implicit in the formulation of the process function. Thus it is very detailed and can be made as precise as desirable. The process function can be used to investigate various productivity relationships, isoquants, and returns to scale for the linehaul process and to examine the behavior of linehaul costs.
