The nearly free molecular drag of a highly cooled blunt body in a hypersonic stream is predicted using the method of Knudsen iteration. The simple Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) model is used for the collisions. The predicted drag coefficient differs substantially from that previously reported, with the main cause of the disagreement thought to be a lack of validity of the simple BGK model for the case of highly nonequilibrium flow. 10 pp. Ref.
