An analysis of the effect of jet noise on residential property value as indicated by (1) market value changes--determined through a comparison of the mean annual variations, during 1955-1967, in sale prices of single-family residences near Los Angeles International Airport with noise exposures up to 105 PNdB; (2) cost of insulating structures against jet noise; (3) cost of avigation (flyover) easements; and (4) damages sought in airport noise litigation. The first three indicators are related to a hypothetical 1,200 sq ft, seven-room, $24,000 stucco house exposed to 100 PNdB. The findings were that, for the hypothetical house, (1) property value changes are not significantly related to jet noise exposure; (2) insulation would cost about $3,800; and (3) the avigation easement would cost about $3,400. Litigation damages sought average about $31,000 per home. 37 pp. Ref.
