Library Circulation Systems--An Overview.
Suggests an on-line real time library circulation system in which the circulation file is created from the shelf list. The terminal inquiry system includes the capability to query and browse through the bibliographic system and the circulation subsystem to determine the availability of sought after material. Also discussed are traditional manual circulation systems, the semi-automated (noncomputer) type, data collection (batch) systems, and other online systems. Areas for future research are noted, including mention of a potentially contentious right-to-privacy issue: advanced circulation systems have the capability for building a dossier on a person's reading habits that could easily be fed to a national databank or supplied on request. Appended are annotated references. 23 pp.
