A critical survey of experimental data on turbulent boundary layers with mass transfer but without compressibility or pressure gradient. Two promising approaches are the classical mixing-length approach, and a largely original characteristic-scales method. The essential step in this latter method is definition of a characteristic velocity in terms of a characteristic stress somewhere in the layer, like the treatment of surface roughness. So far, the best choice of characteristic stress seems to be an integral mean value for the sublayer. Unlike the Mickley-Smith approach, the integral-scale hypothesis works in the case of suction and is independent of the particular conditions determining the actual interaction of the sublayer and logarithmic profile curves. It may therefore be developed into a means of studying the combined effects of mass transfer, pressure gradient, and even lateral curvature. 15 pp. Ref. (MW)
