Current modeling difficulties result from (1) inadequate analysis of the so-called membrane process--the biochemical structure and functional properties of membranes separating various fluid compartments of the body, (2) insufficient design and measurement of critical variables, (3) unsatisfactory statistical design of experiments, (4) the use of imprecise biological jargon, (5) the lack of appropriate functional models of the kidney and muscle cells, (6) poor descriptions of hormone function, (7) inconvenient and expensive methods of incorporating equilibrium and kinetic equations, (8) the absence of stochastic processes and parameter sensitivity analyses, and (9) incomplete understanding of the effects of neural functioning on electrolyte control. 13 pp. Ref.
