A Real-Time Optical Spectrum Analyzer.

A. S. Hoffman

Expert InsightsPublished 1973

Describes a real-time optical speech analyzer for voice communication with computers, as well as radio and telephone. The system described has the ability to perform spectral as well as cepstral analysis, and can serve either as a fine or gross resolution cepstrum analysis device. This resolution depends upon the optical aperture and the spatial frequencies recorded on a magnetic tape loop. In addition, because the optical system also serves as a frequency analyzer, it can be considered as a general purpose real-time frequency analyser which can be utilized with a number of vocoding techniques. These techniques include the standard channel vocoder, voice excited vocoder, and the formant tracking vocoder. This publication is part of the RAND paper series. The paper series was a product of RAND from 1948 to 2003 that captured speeches, memorials, and derivative research, usually prepared on authors' own time and meant to be the scholarly or scientific contribution of individual authors to their professional fields. Papers were less formal than reports and did not require rigorous peer review.
